Puerto Vallarta is no doubt one of the most Instagrammable places in Mexico. Every sunset is different, depending on the place you watch it from, the weather, or the season.
From lush oranges and yellows to pinks and reds, the best sunsets are no doubt, the ones we share with loved ones, with ourselves when in peace, and after an exciting adventure with friends, from the top of a mountain. Did you know in Puerto Vallarta we have many iconic and also natural spots to watch the perfect sunset? Here we share 5 you cannot miss when in Puerto Vallarta.
1. Los Muertos Pier / “Muelle de Los Muertos”
One iconic spot popular amongst locals and tourists in Puerto Vallarta is Los Muertos Pier or “Muelle de los Muertos” in the Romantic Zone. Here you will fall in love with the beautiful colors of the sunsets, mixing with the contrasting and modern structure of the pier and little boats or “pangas” floating around, and why not? All of this while drinking a margarita in your favorite restaurant in the most popular place in town.
Location: Romantic Zone, Col. Emiliano Zapata, Puerto Vallarta.
2. Cerro de la Cruz
If you come to Puerto Vallarta and do not visit el Cerro de la Cruz, you are missing a great spot to watch the sunset and the best view of the whole city.
Going up requires a considerable physical effort but it’s totally worth it because the view is magnificent. Locals love to go to this viewpoint. You have a 360 ° degree view of the city. You can even see Islas Marietas from afar! The sunsets here of course look amazing, and now there’s a small coffee shop at the top where you can enjoy a drink or dessert while watching the beautiful colors of the sky.
There are several variants of routes to get to the Mirador de La Cruz, one is through Josefa Ortiz de DomĂnguez street, a straight uphill route whose slope increases as you get closer to the viewpoint.
Location: Cerro de la Cruz, Col. Centro, Puerto Vallarta
3. Faro de Matamoros
Just a few blocks from the MalecĂłn, you will find this remodeled viewpoint in the city, which is a beacon, although people call it a lighthouse. The Matamoros Street Viewpoint Lighthouse is located on the hill looking over the roofs of Centro, and it offers an excellent panorama of Downtown and the Bay in general.
The lighthouse itself was built and inaugurated in 1932 by the Port Captain, Roberto Alcazar. He served to direct and guide ships in conjunction with the beacon on Calle Galeana and the MalecĂłn until 1978 when they retired.
On this lovely spot, you will definitely get Instagram-worthy shots of the city if you visit in the morning or during the sunset.
Location: C. Matamoros 478, Col. Centro, Puerto Vallarta
4. Mirador in Cerro de Amapas
An almost secret spot that has gotten popular amongst hiking enthusiasts and paragliders. This beautiful spot is located on the top of a mountain, in the middle of the jungle, close to the top villas in the neighborhood of Amapas. How to get there and enjoy the secret viewpoint of the south coast? To get there you will need to hike for approx. 1 hour. Be prepared so you can arrive before the sunset starts and take a breath. We recommend joining a hiking group that has this route as part of their services, as you will need to follow a small trail through the jungle to get there and go back to the city after sunset when it’s dark. Definitely worth the hike to watch the sunset, meditate and have a point of view of the cost not many people have had!
Location: Amapas, Puerto Vallarta
5. The MalecĂłn
The MalecĂłn is the most iconic place in the city, and it has become one of the main meeting points of Puerto Vallarta. This 12-block, one-mile-long esplanade in Downtown, offers a unique and easy place to watch the sunset. It is basically an open-air art gallery where works by various renowned artists are exhibited, and the sculptures you will find throughout the Broadwalk will certainly inspire you to make the perfect shot. Plus, you can enjoy your favorite drink, coffee, snack, or ice cream while you fell in love with the beautiful colors of the sky and the sea at sunset.
Location: Paseo DĂaz Ordaz, Col. Centro, Puerto Vallarta
